Scott Biegert is a big deal to the FHS lacrosse team

Two games into this lacrosse season, Scott Biegert is on pace to score 90 goals in 2009.

While six scores per game is likely an unsustainable rate, it should encourage the Fauquier High Falcons that their senior leader’s goals haven’t diminished since last season even after losing a handful of the Cedar Run District’s best players to graduation.

Biegert’s point production and his aspirations remain high. He has the same team goal for 2009 as he’s had the last few seasons — to qualify for the Northwest Region tournament — and he’s adding to his school-record 110 career goals quicker than ever.

Biegert scored five goals in a 9-6 victory over Freedom on Tuesday after becoming the first Fauquier player to break the 100-goal mark with seven scores in a 17-0 win over Park View last Friday. A four-year varsity starter, Biegert scored the historic goal early in the first half against Park View. He took a pass from Braden Stults and ripped a shot from 15 yards out that hit off the goalie and continued into the net for his second goal of the game.

“It’s a great feeling just to be the first to do something,” Biegert said after Tuesday’s victory. “Starting out I didn’t think I’d be able to get that high.”

He’ll likely have to heighten that goal total significantly if Fauquier is to repeat its success in recent seasons. The Falcons qualified for the region tournament in 2007 and fell just short of that goal with an 11-5 record last season, finishing second in the district after a three-team playoff.

“This will be a tough year to continue that past years’ success because we graduated a lot of talent,” Fauquier coach Reed Gillespie said. “But we’re still a senior-laden team, so hopefully we’ll have some step up and replace those guys we lost.”

Fauquier has only five returning starters, with Biegert the lone attackman back, but its 2-0 start is encouraging as the district schedule approaches.

“It’s a good confidence builder,” said Biegert, whose Falcons start their Cedar Run slate Monday at Liberty. “We have potential to be really good this year, take second or third in the district. If we play to our potential and keep working hard we have the ability to go far in districts and possibly make regionals.”

Returning midfielder starters Sam Tucker and Braden Stults, and returning defensemen starters James Catlett and Mike Safford will play a large role in determining the Falcons’ success. But the new faces in Fauquier’s starting lineup could prove more important...

Why don't you let the readers know (and acknowledge the player) who else made Falcon goals?? One other player had 4 goals in one of the first games!! Let's be fair - it would only take 1 sentence.
