Great chemistry, funny encounters in ‘You Can’t Take it With You’

Even the Great Depression didn’t depress the free-wheeling Vanderhof-Sycamore-Carmichael household in the Pulitzer Prize-winning “You Can’t Take it With You,” which is being performed for the next two weekends by the Middleburg Players at Buchanan Hall in Upperville.

This fun-loving bunch made their own way and their own music. Come see the Middleburg Players literally bring fireworks to the stage with George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart’s 1937 classic, which premiered at the Booth Theatre and ran for an impressive 837 performances.

Director Lori Daly notes that even those who’ve seen the play or the movie won’t want to miss this performance. “The Players bring amazing talent and chemistry to this fun tale,” she said.

Loudoun Valley High School drama teacher Ike Stoneberger lights up the stage as the simultaneously phlegmatic and charismatic grandfather and Melissa Martin-Marsh and John Nesbit steal hearts as the young Alice and her fiancé Tony, Daly commented. George Mason University students Mark Mariano Deguzman, who is re-visiting the role of Ed Carmichael, and Camille Rouse, debuting as Elsie Carmichael, bring energy to the stage, she said.

Alyn Beauchamp delights as Penny, Alice and Elsie’s mother, who writes plays because a typewriter was mistakenly delivered to her home eight years earlier. Her husband Paul, played by David Witt, and Mr. DePinna, played by Jules Watzich, the iceman, who delivers to the home and never leaves, spend their days making explosives in the basement.

Kevin Daly dazzles as Boris Kolenkhov, Essie’s ballet teacher and Doug Dickinson and Julia Tayloe add spark to the home and help the family as Donald and Rheba.

When Mr. and Mrs. Kirby — Tony’s conservative parents, played by Dean Miller and Maureen Masanoff — arrive to dinner a full evening early, the audience will witness as the household full of love and unbound by traditional rules abruptly meets tradition, Daly said.

You Can't Take It With You” will run at Buchanan Hall, 8549 John Mosby Highway in Upperville, Friday and Saturday evenings, March 20 through March 28 at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday, March 22 and 29 at 3 p.m. Tickets are $15 and are available at the door and also may be reserved by emailing contact@middleburgplayers.com or calling (703) 327-6742.
