Dominion Club Launches Awareness Campaign
As far as Gina McCabe is concerned, knowledge is a simple but powerful weapon in the fight to end all types of abuse.
So the Warrenton author met recently with members of the Dominion Woman's Club to kickoff the organization's Domestic Violence Awareness Committee.
The club is an action-oriented group whose members support numerous programs in Fauquier and Prince William counties. They include adult literacy, conservation initiatives, local school donations, tutoring programs and assistance for emergency shelters for abused women and their children.
“This new committee was born out of [our] Home Life Committee,” Fiona Barshow explained. “[That] committee has done some work regarding domestic violence, but we decided we wanted to work with Gina to promote awareness of domestic violence and abuse.”
Last year, McCabe wrote and published a book called “What if I Tell.” In it, she shared her tale of being sexually abused as a child and how it has affected her throughout her life.
“The purpose of [this meeting] is not to tell my personal story. It is to see what we can do as women to stop emotional, sexual, verbal physical, and child abuse,” McCabe said. “No one is doing what you are doing [and] I thank you so much for involving me.”
McCabe went on to outline a three-prong approach for combating abuse.
