Court Offers Informal Justice
When Danielle Rice couldn’t get a refund for her daughter’s dance classes after In Motion Dance Center closed, she planned to file a case in small claims court.
When the Warrenton studio closed unexpectedly last month, parents were told they could take their children to Culpeper for lessons. Rice says she does not want to do that and she should get her money back. As of last week, she said all of her efforts to get it have been fruitless.
Although there are no court documents to indicate Rice has filed a claim, the process is fairly straightforward.
All “small claims” cases are heard in the Small Claims Division of the Fauquier County General District Court. The court can hear cases in which the plaintiff is seeking a money judgment of up to $5,000 or recovery of personal property with a maximum value of $5,000.
