Polo Organizers Hope for Break Through
Tickets are now on sale for the annual Land Rover America's Polo Cup — a weekend bash that includes a fashion show and musical entertainment in addition to three polo matches. This year the event will be held May 8-9 in Poolesville, Md. According to organizers, “a portion of the proceeds” benefits “local charitable organizations including Journey for the Cure, a not-for-profit public charity.”
Tareq Salahi of Oasis Vineyard is a member of the Journey for the Cure Foundation's board of directors. He acknowledged that the polo event, which is held on the second weekend in May, is a “signature event” for the Hume-based charity.
In spite of its prestigious billing, however, the event has been through growing pains in its first couple of years, and cash contributions to beneficiaries have been limited.
Last year's event was rained out, Salahi said. The year before that, he claims, the America's Polo Cup took a huge financial hit when it had to issue $30,000 to $40,000 in refunds because the caterer allegedly “ran out of food.”
The caterer, Market Salamander, located in Middleburg, filed a civil suit against Salahi as an individual and as the registered agent for America's Polo Cup Inc., in Fauquier County Circuit Court last year.
In it, they claimed event organizers allowed too many people who hadn't paid for the privilege into areas where special catering services were provided. Market Salamander sought approximately $304,000 in damages for breach of oral and written contracts.
The litigation is ongoing.
“The [America's Polo Cup] event has actually lost money [since its inception] but that doesn't affect what the Journey for the Cure Foundation does,” Salahi said.

Our family was at this event two years ago. We enjoyed it.
But yes, - Market Salamander did run out of food the first hour. We cant blame the charity or the organizers. There was barely anyone in the tent and the caterer was simply not prepared, and their staff didnt even speak english!
This really is a great event, wish we had it closer to home here in Warrenton.
Sorry to hear Mr.Arundel is retiring from Great Meadow too- he has done great work by saving that land from developers.
