Yankees Sign Former Liberty High star Heidler as a Pitcher
Who knew Paul Heidler had that kind of right arm?
Now the New York Yankees own that arm.
Heidler, a former Liberty High outfielder who recently graduated from Longwood University, was signed by the Yankees to a non-drafted free agent contract this month. He has reported to the Yankees' minor league instructional complex in Tampa, Fla.., where he will be assessed and perhaps assigned to a minor league team.
While the former LHS star remains a long way from Yankee Stadium, he has begun his journey thanks to a series of amazing events.
At Longwood, Heidler was a starting outfielder for three years before asking to switch to pitcher for his final year.
Heidler blossomed, going 4-1 in 13 appearances, and leading the team in ERA (4.89).
Part of his arsenal was a 90-plus MPH fastball that allowed Heidler to strike out 43 batters in 42.1 innings.
That fastball apparently caught the Yankees' eye during a road game against then No. 1-ranked University of North Carolina...See the Wednesday print edition of the Fauquier Times-Democrat for the complete story.
