Mixed Construction Market Keeps Local Firm on the Go

Building relationships is the key to success for the staff at Dominion Construction Group in Warrenton.

The company’s focus is light industrial and retail buildings. But that’s not all: DCG also builds churches.

These days, Project Manager Naomi Devine is keeping an eye on construction at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Fredericksburg. Sub-contractors on the job recently got some help from 100 carpenters who volunteered with a missionary group, she said.

Although they weren't professional carpenters, the volunteers did an excellent job, according to DCG's Vice President Pieter Oosthuizen. Oosthuizen said they did all of the framing for the building and finished the work in four days.

“It's the first time I can remember that we did something like that,” Oosthuizen said. “It's not something most [general contractors] would do, since it is less work and less revenue . But we did it in the spirit of teamwork and building relationships.”

By using volunteers, the church saved about $70,000. But it paid off in other ways, Oosthuizen said.

“The people from the church would make our guys lunch — they really appreciated what we did,” he said.

In addition to the church project, DCG managers are currently overseeing a number of projects in the area. Progress is being made on a car wash in Manassas. An office building in Ashburn is almost done.

Located on Industrial Road, DCG is starting its fourth year in business here. Under the leadership of president and founding member Philip Clark, the company provides general contractor services in Virginia, Maryland and West Virginia. It specializes in commercial projects.

“It’s a good, mixed market, and we’re good at all [of those types of projects],” Clark said.
