Southeastern students learn through service

Graduating students at Southeastern Alternative High School are a good example of recent research that indicates students can learn a great deal from participating in community service projects.

According to a recent issue of “Educational Leadership,” students who learn from their community service experiences are more likely to stay in school and graduate from high school.

Although the Fauquier County seniors have the option of graduating with students at their base school, this year, more students graduated from Southeastern than in the past. During a June 5 ceremony, 16 young people accepted their diplomas from Principal Craig Carscallen, who had heartfelt comments for each student during the presentation.

Students were individually commended for having positive goals, their work ethics, improvement and consistency. Carscallen said, “Students at Southeastern aren't here because everything is going great in their lives.”

He noted that students are dealing with a variety of situations, some of which are beyond their contrrol and others that they “brought upon themselves.” More than once, he recognized students who have “done what they had to do to graduate.”

And part of their education has been becoming involved in the community.

“These students are hard workers, willing to do many things. [Their community service] helps them make connections for the future,” said Debra Heflin, one of the teachers responsible for the students' service learning.

“When they do stuff for other people, it changes them. It gives them a sense of knowing that everyone needs help,” Heflin said.
