Gators rebound with 6-4 win over Senators

Most coaches agree an important component to success is creating opportunities.

Taking advantage of a rival's mistakes while limiting your own is often the difference between winning and losing.

The Fauquier Gators of the wood-bat Valley Baseball League found that out over the weekend as the Warrenton team split their opening games against Winchester and Haymarket.

The Gators committed two errors Saturday against the Winchester Royals while earning just three hits after the third inning en route to a 4-2 setback in their season opener.

All of those hits came in the bottom of the seventh inning when, with one out, pinch hitter Ian Dike and Matt Wessinger smacked back-to-back singles. Cole Kraft followed up with an infield single of his own, but Fauquier was frustrated after that by Winchester pitcher Byron Mendenhall.

"We didn't drive in runners when we needed to. We didn't make routine plays on defense," said Fauquier manager Paul Koch.

Fast-forward to Sunday, again at Athey Memorial Park, and the situation improved dramatically.

"We made all our routine plays and we capitalized on the RBI situation," said Koch.

Against the Senators, Fauquier hopped all over Haymarket miscues right from the start, even when the situations looked bleak, leading to a 6-4 win.

Designated hitter Kevin Deese rocked a two-out double off Grant Sasser to get the rally started and he was immediately joined on base by Daniel Baggett when the centerfielder was hit by a pitch.

A single to right from Chris Love, aided by an error, scored both Baggett and Deese for a 2-0 lead.

Two innings later, again with two outs, Fauquier made it 3-0.

The Gators kept it up in the fifth inning off relief pitcher Steve Forster, this time putting runners in scoring position by executing on a Haymarket error in right field...
