Fauquier Fair eating contest draws 52 competitors
Raucous yells of "Shut you mouth and keep eating!" and "Don't talk, just swallow!" aren't typical dinner table conversation.
But the Fauquier County Fair’s First Annual Pizza-Eating Competition wasn't exactly a quiet atmosphere for a family supper.
This was an all-out, stuff-your-face-athon.
On the menu: a seemingly endless supply of cheese pizza, and a bottle of water should you need it to keep the conglomeration of cheese, sauce, and crust moving down your gullet.
The goal for all 52 people who entered the various age groups was the same: Eat as many slices as possible — crust included — in three minutes.
The idea for a pizza-eating contest was the brainchild of the event’s sponsor, Spitony’s Pizza in New Baltimore.
And judging by the capacity crowd hungry to dive into its cheese pizza, Spitony's may want to sponsor it again.
“We’ve been serving this community for 35 years. What better way to celebrate that then with this event?” said Spitony’s rep Eric Burkholder, who also acted as a judge during the contest.
Participants were divided into four categories: 6-8, 9-12, 13-16, and 17 and older, with room for 13 competitors in each age bracket. By the time the contest began, vacant spots were filled by onlookers who approached the table with “what the heck” expressions on their faces.
The 6-8 bracket brought more nibbling than intense jowl-stuffing. The winner was Tristan Nisbett, who devoured one and a half pieces.
“It almost gave me a tummy ache,” said Nisbett.
The 8-12 sect, however, successfully captured the sort of scarfing-spectacular that most spectators had come to witness. Instead of dainty bites, participants began folding pieces in half and even tri-folding them as they stuffed in slices at odd angles and struggled to swallow...See the Wednesday print edition of the Fauquier Times-Democrat for the complete story.
