Justin Wilson plays beat the clock
Justin Wilson’s all-star experience was the briefest of any Valley Baseball League player.
It lasted 6.4 seconds.
Wilson (UNC-Charlotte) accomplished a lot in that time, though. The Fauquier Gators outfielder won the 60-yard dash competition Sunday prior to the VBL all-star game at Central High School in Woodstock.
“He is the fastest guy in the Valley League,” Fauquier manager Paul Koch said. “A 6.4 [seconds] 60 is absolutely flying.”
Kevin Deese’s all-star experience lasted a bit longer, as he compete in the VBL home run derby, while Chad Oberacker and David Hayes were among the five Gators who actually participated in the VBL all-star game, which their North team lost, 1-0, to the South.
Anders Oster, Kyle Putnam and B.J. Martin also made the North all-star team and were subsequently chosen to play for a conglomerate VBL all-star team that took on the Cal Ripken, Sr. League all stars Wednesday in the inaugural Mid-Atlantic Classic at Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf, Md. The Cal Ripken all stars won that interleauge game, which was televised live on MASN, 2-1.
The Valley All-Stars took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning and its first two pitchers had a perfect game going through four innings, but the Ripken All Stars tied the game with a triple and fielder’s choice in the bottom of the fifth. The Ripken all stars then took the lead with an unearned run in the sixth inning.
None of the Gators’ three representatives on the VBL team played in the Mid-Atlantic Classic.
Many Gators contributed in the VBL all-star game Sunday, though. Oster (North Georgia) had four assists and two put outs as the North’s starting shortstop and went 1-for-3 at the plate...
