Lord Fairfax CC Adds Men's, Women's Hoops

It’s not an international destination for athletes, but Lord Fairfax Community College has drawn interest from as far as Australia for its new men’s and women’s basketball programs.

That lone e-mail received from oversees is the exception, but LFCC men’s coach Chris Graham and women’s coach Kathy Carey say they have seen plenty of local intrigue. They will field rosters with students from LFCC campuses in Fauquier County and Middletown, and a Luray-Page County Center.

The Lord Fairfax Cannons will compete in the Virginia Community College System league against teams from Front Royal to Roanoke to Chesapeake. The men are scheduled to play 15 games and the women 17, beginning with a Nov. 6 against Patrick Henry College.

“It’s to offer more to the students,” Graham said. “Bringing in basketball might help legitimize Lord Fairfax with it having a couple sports programs.”

LFCC began men’s and women’s soccer programs in 2005. The women didn’t field a team in 2008, but neither Graham nor Carey expects participation problems with basketball. Carey said it has been a popular intramural sport.

“The demand was out there. There was such an interest in basketball from the student body, and with the enrollments higher….it was just a natural progression,” said Carey, who will also coach the women’s soccer team this year...
