Big, bigger, biggest: Central front line devours Cougars
Perhaps the only part of Brian Mills' body that didn't get a workout Tuesday were the facial muscles that allowed the Kettle Run High boys basketball player to still smile.
Two hours butting heads with Central (Woodstock) center J.J. Armentrout left Mills' body and ego bruised.
If the game had been a World Wrestling Federation match, well, Armentrout would have heaved Mills into the 80th row.
Suffice it to say, Armentrout used his much thicker frame to “educate” the thinner Mills on why it helps to be big and strong in basketball.
Simple spin moves, offensive rebound putbacks, three-foot jump hooks — there was no speck of paint within 10 feet of the hoop that Armentrout and his teammates didn't own in the Falcons' impressive 63-38 win over Mills' undermanned Cougars.
“It was like men against boys. I think I held up pretty well considering the weight difference,” said Mills, before concluding, “It kind of reinforced what coach preaches. I need to get in the weight room.”
Mills, who “packs” perhaps 170 pounds on his 6-foot-5 frame, was giving up about 50 pounds to Armentrout, who stands about 6-5, 230. Armentrout finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds.
Mills fared great when he had the ball, though, tallying a team-high 11 points, but it was a still long night for the home team.
Not only is Kettle Run a young group with no seniors and still maturing physically, but Kettle Run coach Troy Washington said a recent flu bug has infected his guys, making the challenge of stopping the No. 3 team in the Northwestern District even more taxing.
Six-foot-3 Cougar starter Taylor Sanford missed the game with sickness, while a clearly-run down scoring leader Connor Massei scored six points and seemed to lack the pep in his legs to finish some plays. In addition 6-4 junior Jimmy Hargro was unavailable.
To compensate, Washington called up freshman Connor Adams from the JV and started him. Sophomore Danny Powers also got a rare start, and hit two 3-pointers...
