Benimon's point total keeps rising, and so are 11-5 Falcons
Recently, Fauquier High boys basketball coach Wayne Brizzi was asked how many points senior star Jerrelle Benimon has in his illustrious career. A three-year standout, Benimon is believed to be close to the coveted 1,000 point mark.
Brizzi said he would have to look it up.
According to Benimon, that barrier has been shattered.
“I’m over 1,000 already,” Benimon said confidently after Friday’s 64-54 win over Osbourn Park, a game where Benimon added 24 points to his ever-expanding, yet unconfirmed total.
Three years of varsity wars have left the 6-foot-8 all-purpose forward as the one of the top scorers in school history, and a teammate as valuable as they come. Friday's home win was another prime example.
With point guard Joey Geary held out until the second quarter, Benimon often ran the Falcon offense. He delivered several crisp assists to Conner McCartin for impossible-to-miss layups, and brought the ball upcourt, looking pretty darn Magic Johnson-like in the process. He also had two dunks.
Just last Tuesday against Osbourn, the reigning district co-player of the year had a “quadruple double” with 13 points, 17 rebounds, 11 assists and 10 blocks.
“Jerrelle is just so good, he means everything to this team,” said teammate Tyler Lamper.
Of course, Benimon, who is averaging about 20 points a game, was just as stellar last year when he averaged 19.4 points and the Falcons went 7-15. This year the Falcons are 11-5 overall and 7-2 in the Cedar Run District with a more seasoned lineup surrounding Benimon.
Geary, for example, is a dynamic guard who has evolved into the team's clearcut No. 2 player. The senior missed a practice last week and didn't start vs. OP.
While the Falcons did OK without him, Geary’s aggressive drives and ability to ignite the fast break added an extra dimension when he was inserted...See the Wednesday print edition of the Fauquier Times-Democrat for the complete story.
