Falcon Flournoy's state meet didn't finish as planned
It’s a sequence most people can’t relate to: losing weight and then not feeling better for it.
But that sums up Greg Flournoy’s wrestling season.
After finishing fourth at the Group AAA state tournament last season as a 112-pound freshman, Flournoy dropped down to the 103 weight class this season, hoping to win a state championship. He fell short last weekend, though, again placing fourth with a 3-0 loss to Hanover’s Spencer Alexander in the 103 consolation final at Oscar Smith High School.
“I cut this weight this year. I figured it would get me a state title. It just didn’t play out like I wanted,” said Flournoy, who also was seemingly benefiting from the departures of FHS teammate Ryan Hunsberger and Battlefield defending state champion Beau Martino, who both moved from 103 to 112.
“Last year I surprised myself getting fourth because I never thought I would. This year, it’s a little bit disappointing. I wanted better,” Flournoy said.
The Falcon sophomore fell from title contention when Robinson’s Jake Smith beat him, 5-3, in triple overtime of the semifinals. Flournoy beat Smith in overtime earlier this season and led the Robinson 112-pounder by two points Saturday with about 10 seconds remaining in the second overtime. But Smith scored a late takedown to push the third overtime and went on to win.
