Gangs National Growth Not Reflected Here
According to federal authorities, gangs are on the move, with more members making their presence known in suburban and rural communities. But local police say there's nothing to indicate there are more gang members or related activity here now than in the past.
“I'd say there's a gang presence in Fauquier County, but there's not a gang problem,” said Fauquier County Detective Jason Romero. “From time to time we come into contact with people who claim gang affiliation or wear representative colors. But I feel comfortable saying the gang presence here hasn't increased, and gang-related crime hasn't gone up,” he added.
Romero, who represents the Sheriff's Office on the Northern Virginia Regional Gang Task Force, said he's already seen the 2009 National Gang Threat Assessment which was released recently by the FBI.
