Cougar freshman basketball squad improves to 10-7 by blasting Warren County, 56-17
Members of the Kettle Run High boys freshman basketball team astutely noticed a photographer at Tuesday's game in Nokesville. He looked professional and he was taking pictures of them in a 56-17 home win against Warren County.
“The kids asked what the guy with the camera was doing, and I said, 'Keep playing,'” said coach Joey Carter.
With one game left in their season, the Kettle Run freshman have accomplished historic things.
Coach Carter's guys have gone a combined 3-0 against county rivals Fauquier and Liberty, and aside from a few bad losses to North Stafford and Sherando, are giving their spanking new school something to boast about.
Overall the freshmen boys have a 10-7 record going into the season finale at Millbrook Friday, Feb. 6.
“Double digit wins is something the kids are proud of,” said Carter, a special education teacher at Kettle Run who took the job right before the season when the original coaching choice did not work out.
Carter, the son of former Liberty High activities director Jerry Carter, says his players bought into the system quickly and he's quick to praise the entire nine-man roster.
With six-minute quarters, freshman games are fairly short at 24 minutes, but even if you got there late Tuesday, you couldn’t miss two of the Cougars’ top guns: small forward Reid Turnure, and guard Austin Newcomer.
There was a certain inner swagger about the shaggy-haired Turnure, as if he has freshman ball figured out, which he may have.
