Furloughed Workers Eligible for Unemployment
Furloughed Workers Eligible for UnemploymentBy Bill Walsh
Times-Democrat Staff Writer
The economic meltdown is global in scale, and being felt, albeit somewhat less painfully, in Fauquier County as elsewhere.
According to Virginia Employment Commission (VEC) calculations, 1,756 county residents were out of work in December, a figure that exceeds those from the beginning of the year by more than 520 new jobless people.
Though numbers are hard to come by, it is highly likely that in Fauquier as in the surrounding counties, part-time work has replaced full-time work for a number of residents, reductions in hours and pay, or both, have been instituted in some business firms, and employees are being asked to take furloughs — days or weeks away from work — without pay.
Most of the last-named are unaware that they are eligible for unemployment compensation for the unpaid leave.
