Midland UMC wins Hospitality Award

Midland United Methodist Church has recently been recognized by United Methodist Communications (UMCom) as an official "Welcoming Congregation."

These are a select group of United Methodist congregations nationwide that meet specific criteria, including embracing newcomers and providing opportunities in discipleship. Only 52 congregations among over 1,500 have received this designation to date.

The Rev. Charlie Stribula, pastor of Midland UMC, recently said, "I'm pleased our congregation is part of our denomination's welcoming effort; Christian hospitality is an important practice of our faith community. Our weekly fellowship gatherings after Sunday worship, and our semiannual pancake suppers are just two ways by which we extend Christ's love to our community and to each other. If you're looking for a family with a story you can jump into, come give ours a try."

"Open hearts, open minds, open doors" is the theme of the denominational effort. The overall aim is to invite people, particularly those between 18 to 34 years old, to enter into connection with the Christian community.

Midland United Methodist Church is located at 5435 Midland Road, Midland. It is a small congregation of about 80 members, offering traditional worship in a cozy atmosphere of family and fellowship, while reaching out to their local community, and to the broader world, since its formation in 1882.

Their pastor strives to combine the fruits of his church leadership experience, seminary education, and military career into effective ministry at Midland.

Alexandria District Superintendant the Rev. Alan Reifsnyder presented a plaque recognizing the congregation for its achievement during worship service on Sunday, Aug. 2.
