J.G. Brumfield
At its annual conference in Lynchburg on May 5 and 6, the Virginia Recycling Association will present its annual "Outstanding Community Volunteer Performance" award to Brumfield Elementary School. Judy Olson, a parent volunteer who spearheads recycling efforts at Brumfield, nominated the school for the statewide award.
Under Olsen's leadership recycling has been front and center at Brumfield as students, parents and faculty have participated in a number of initiatives.
The school's ecology club, led by fifth-grade teacher Pam Graves for the past four years, is open to all fourth- and fifth-grade students. Ecology club members are in charge of collecting all the recycling throughout the school. In addition to recycling, the ecology club builds bluebird houses to attract wild bluebirds, plants trees, picks up trash around the school, as well as along the Greenway path around Warrenton, and as of this spring, will be helping with some maintenance of trails in local and state parks and with the local Parks and Recreation Department.
Parents participate in many of these events, and the club takes at least one hike a year with many parents attending with their children. Parents play a big part in other efforts as well. Participating in a recycling effort with the Terracycle company, parent volunteers help out in the lunch room and make sure that kids put their foil juice pouches and Nabisco cookie wrappers into special recycling containers. Staff, students and parents help with rinsing the juice pouches, which are mailed off with the cookie wrappers to Terracycle where they are used to make tote bags, backpacks and a host of other items.
Fourth- and fifth-graders take all their food scraps and place them into one of two compost bins in an inner courtyard area outside the cafeteria. The bins were made from old wine barrels, which were donated to the school and turned into clever compost bins using all recycled materials. When the compost is ready, they will use it around the school in the gardens they are planting this spring.
Last October, the school's PTO sponsored a fundraising and awareness event focusing on plastic bags. Custom re-useable bags were created with a Brumfield Green Scene logo and sold as a fundraiser.
At the start of the school year, the administrative staff initiated a program that sends printed materials home with only one student from each family. Called "Oldest and Only," this program saves about 150 sheets of paper each time printed communication materials are sent home. The PTO does the same with any printed materials that go home and have also started doing more communication with parents via e-mail.
Statistically speaking, Brumfield recycled at a rate of 12.7 percent last year (2007-2008 school year), recycling 20,700 pounds, the third best of all 10 elementary schools in Fauquier County. The school also had the heaviest recycling container average for elementary schools (5,175 pounds per load) and the fifth heaviest in the school system, saving the school system hauling fees. Last year, Brumfield saved the school system $465.75 in tipping fees, kept over 20,000 pounds of refuse out of the landfill and earned the school system $207 through the sale to the landfill. The year before that (2006-2007 school year) Brumfield recycled at a rate of 7.7 percent (10,340 pounds).

Mrs. Ernst (grandmother of an AMS student) visited Auburn on April 28 to deliver a special presentation to Mrs. Pegues' class on Daphne du Maurier's novel, "Rebecca." To lead up to this event, the students had formed "set design" companies and created movie set models for "Rebecca." These movie sets were fabricated using only recyclable materials. Along with Mrs. Ernst's presentation, students presented their movie sets. Meanwhile, tea was served for all students and guests by parent volunteers. Thanks to Mrs. Ernst and parents for making this special event possible.
Auburn students have been hard at work creating a video that spotlights Fauquier County by describing the traditions, history, and beauty of the county. Students have contributed photos, historical information, and narration throughout. Information about ordering this video can be found on the home page of Auburn's Web site. Special thanks to the AMS PTO for serving popcorn and soda at the premiere.
