Murder/Suicide Suspected in Shooting Deaths

A man and woman, both in their 30s, died from apparent gunshot wounds in a home on Pinnacle Court in Warrenton on Monday night.

Further investigation determined the woman was shot multiple times. A detective said investigators found a firearm near the deceased man.

Police identified the victims as Bruce Curtin, 39, and his wife, Tara Curtin, 30.

We believe this was likely a domestic related murder-suicide,” Warrenton Police Chief Connie Novak said Tuesday morning. She added that unspecified domestic and financial issues were implicated in the shootings.

Emergency dispatchers received a 9-1-1 call from a home in the 200 block of Pinnacle Court shortly after 9 p.m. Monday. The caller reported someone in the house was shot, Novak said.

Warrenton police, Fauquier County deputies and fire and rescue personnel went to the residence where they found two bodies.

Two children, ages five and six, were in the house when the shootings occurred. The children, who were intially in the custody of the Department of Social Services pending notification of next of kin, were released to a grandparent Tuesday afternoon.

On Tuesday, one neighborhood woman, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described the development as a family-oriented community where there are lots of kids.

There are probably more than 20 kids [living] on this street,” the woman said of nearby Preston Drive. “It is a very quiet, very safe neighborhood.”

Her friend concurred.

This is the type of neighborhood where you move to be safe,” she said.

Aside from the wail of an ambulance siren on Monday night, they said they were unaware of what occurred until they took their kids to the bus stop on Tuesday morning. Another neighbor told them what happened.

While neither woman knew the victims, they said they may have seen the children out playing.

You can pretty much spot everyone around here,” the first woman said.
