Fauquier boys track team a safe place to find talented jumpers

It wasn’t difficult for Fauquier High to sweep the top three spots in both hurdle races at Wednesday’s meet, which was only a small triangular, after all.

That doesn’t mean finishing first was a breeze for any Falcon. The Fauquier hurdling corps has become fairly formidable this season, so a healthy battle between brethren has developed.

“They don’t like to lose to each other,” Fauquier Falcons coach Quentin Jones said, referring to seniors Alphonso Jordan and Kyle Donovan and juniors Joseph Burnett and Dante Zimmerman.

“They’ve all been doing it from freshman year,” Jones said. “They’re all guys that practice hard….All four have matured well.”

Fauquier’s hurdlers helped it win the boys competition Wednesday with 83 points, while the Fauquier girls won with 77 points. The Culpeper boys finished second with 43 points, the Culpeper girls took second with 64 points, the Liberty boys placed third with 19 points and the Liberty girls ended third with eight points.

Jordan led the way for the Fauquier hurdlers, dominating the 300-meter hurdles to place first in 42 seconds.

“He’s about at where he was last year,” Jones said. “Now he’s gotta get where he drops a little further [time] if he wants to be good at the regional and state level.”

Jordan also won the long jump with a leap of 19 feet, 3 inches and took second in the 200 dash with a time of 23.8 seconds.

Meanwhile, Burnett won the 110 hurdles in 15.6, edging Zimmerman, the runner-up who finished in 16 seconds.

“The light switch kind of clicked on for Burnett and he’s finding he’s pretty good at this,” Jones said.

Burnett said he has cut a full second off his 110 hurdle time this season, setting a personal-best at 15.47 after running 16.47 at his peak in 2008...
