FHS Girls Soccer Opens 2-2
Sean Carrick is the fourth Fauquier High girls soccer coach in four years, and judging by the way his youthful team is competing in the tough Cedar Run District, he'd love to build some longevity with his squad.
The Falcons have opened 2-2 with a fresh-faced unit composed of one freshman, six sophomores and eight juniors.
“We’re not as good as the top three of Battlefield, Osbourn Park and Loudoun Valley, but we’re doing pretty well against the teams we can compete against. We’re a AA team in an AAA district,” said Carrick, referring to Fauquier’s enrollment which is considerably smaller than OP and Battlefield.
Carrick brings a committed approach to his first season.
He has his United States Soccer Federation C license, as does FHS assistant and current girls JV coach Rick Ashley.
Although Carrick — formerly the FHS girls JV soccer coach — wasn’t named varsity coach until late in the process, he still had the Falcons lifting weights before the year. They watch film of opponents when rain ruins practice.
“I’m a big student of the game. We try to keep up with the state of the art,” he said.
The Falcons' two wins came against Culpeper, 3-1, and Stonewall Jackson, 4-3.
They lost to 2008 state runnerup Battlefield, 4-0, and Osbourn, 3-0.
Carrick was a little disappointed in the setback to Osbourn, and hopes to get them back in the rematch. “I did not recognize my team that night,” he said.
Overall, though, the new coach has found a lot to like in his 18-girl roster...
