His Front Royal law firm expects revenue to drop by about a third, largely because of the slumping housing market.

That means Virginia Delegate Clifford L. “Clay” Athey and the practice's other five attorney will divvy up about 10 percent less in revenue than they did in 2007.

None of his seven support staff will be laid off. But they received a smaller, end-of-year bonus.

We're like everybody,” Athey said last Friday at the Times-Democrat office during a discussion of the 2009 General Assembly session. “Are we going to be okay, or not?”

The Republican delegate, whose 18th District includes Warren County and part of Frederick and Fauquier counties, believes the economy may begin to turn around next spring.

Athey hopes the federal government stimulus money and bills Virginia lawmakers approved this year will spark a recovery.

He talked about some of those measures during a wide ranging, 90-minute interview that also touched on renewable energy, privatizing certain state functions and the 2009 gubernatorial race.
