Seton downs Wakefield, 8-4, in boys lacrosse rematch

The Seton School Conquistadors had a three-goal cushion for the last 28 minutes of their game against the Wakefield School boys lacrosse team Friday.

But they didn’t celebrate sitting down at game’s end.

The Conquistadors leaped exuberantly and smiled unabashedly after winning, 8-4, their opening game of the Archwood Lacrosse Tournament, a round-robin event at Wakefield.

“This is a huge deal,” Seton junior Dan Koehr said afterward. “I’ve never beaten Wakefield.”

Koehr is not alone. No Seton boys lacrosse player has ever beaten the Owls.

The Conquistadors (2-2) paid no attention to that history Friday. Midway through the first quarter, they scored two goals in less than a minute for a 2-0 lead over Wakefield (1-3) and remained ahead 3-2 at quarter’s end. Koehr then scored two goals in the final five minutes of the second quarter to give Seton a 6-2 halftime lead.

“They really put it to us, playing fundamentally good lacrosse,” Wakefield coach Warren Shumate said. “One thing about Seton, I don’t care if they have five guys on the field, they’ll play until they’re dead. They absolutely just love to compete. Their kids are highly motivated and, especially, they love playing against us.”

The Conquistadors particularly enjoyed their last game against Wakefield on March 27. Although they lost that matchup, 7-6, they drew confidence from the game.

“I expected them to win easily. But after the game it was 6-7, and I was like, ‘We can beat them,’” Koehr said. “Coming into the (rematch) game, we really felt we could win. We were just more confident and knew we could stick with them.”

Seton hung with Wakefield despite poor playing conditions. High winds and wet grass lingered from a morning rain storm, which left the playing surface muddy. Lines of grass were worn away across the field and the area around the crease was nothing more than a mud pit.

The conditions still couldn’t keep Seton from scoring six first-half goals, though...
