Changed field location hampers Wakefield girls in 4-1 soccer loss to Seton
Pitch location. Its importance isn’t exclusive to baseball.
Confusion over which soccer pitch was designated for Saturday’s game, and where it was located, contributed to Wakefield School’s 4-1 loss to the Seton School girls soccer team. Four typical Wakefield starters missed the start of the match at Valley View Community Park in Nokesville.
Among the Owls late to arrive were goalkeeper Maxx Rice and two defensive backs. By no coincidence, Seton scored three goals in the first 15 minutes.
With those strikes against them, the Owls were essentially out of the game before halftime.
“If we…had all our players here on time to get a good warmup going, I think we would have started the first half a lot stronger and things would have gone differently. Maybe they wouldn’t have had all the chances they had,” senior midfielder Diane Leggette said. “We got kind of deflated and we got anxious when we got down.”
Over the first 15 minutes, Wakefield had to use two players in goal that had little goalkeeping experience, leading to Seton scores by Cassie Burgess, Monika Der-bagosiahn and Mary Duran. Once all the Owls reached the Valley View Community Park field, a scenic nine-mile drive from Seton School in Manassas, Wakefield played much better.
Leggette scored in the 13th minute to make the score 3-1. It was her 10th goal of the season, and a quite impressive one.
“She is phenomenal. She can strike at any time,” Seton coach Edwin Duran said. “She hit a beautiful shot on us that went over the keeper’s head.”
Seton’s only second half goal, meanwhile, was a bit of a fluke. Ten minutes after halftime, Rice shanked a goalie punt and the ball found the foot of Seton’s Rachel Lambretch. With Rice out of the goal box, Lambretch shot from 20 yards out. The ball slammed into the left post and caromed into the right side of the net, making the score 4-1.
“After we got everybody here and got connected, it was a 1-1 game,” first-year Wakefield coach Norm Constantine said. “But no excuses, they got four, we got one…They just were better than us.”
No other team has been better than Wakefield (4-1-0) this season. The Owls opened with four consecutive wins before losing to Seton.
“We’re a good team. Good teams lose games,” Constantine said. “Coming into today we scored 30 goals in four games, and today we got one. We expect to score goals, and we will score goals.”
Wakefield entered Saturday’s game with an 8-0 win over Notre Dame Academy on Friday, a 10-1 win over Rappahannock County on March 30, an 8-0 win over Quantico School on March 27 and a 4-1 win over Pope John Paul the Great on March 24.
The Owls didn’t match that production against Seton because they simply didn’t create enough scoring opportunities. Seton possessed the ball much of the game and even when Wakefield transitioned to offense, through balls were a rare sight...
