In search of first win, Kettle Run football team tackles smaller foe
You heard it here first: the Kettle Run football team could win this week. Really.
After a season-opening 81-0 loss to Liberty and a 52-6 loss last week to Fauquier High, the worst is over for Kettle Run, which visits The Covenant School, a private institution in Charlotteville, Friday at 5 p.m.
“We expect a victory; nothing else," Kettle Run quarterback Justin Duval said.
After two weeks of getting physically battered by the only two Group AAA schools on its schedule, Kettle Run faces a much smaller school that is no where near as big or deep across the offensive and defensive lines as LHS and FHS. The Cougars may actually be able to run some plays like they were drawn up in practice.
Then again, Covenant should not be taken lightly.
The Eagles are 1-1, having beaten Atlantic Shores 28-26, and losing to Flint Hill 46-21. Despite just 42 players on the roster, most are lacrosse players from Covenant's perennial state championship team. “Eighty percent of them play lacrosse, and they're used to winning,” said Covenant coach Mark Sanford.
“I hope...that we can compete," Kettle Run coach Jeff Lloyd said. "We play a private school that is pretty good, but usually, historically, except for the elite private schools, they’re not as deep as your public AAAs and AAs."
Covenant's Sanford has observed Kettle Run's progress and concluded they are a team to fear. “We've scouted them and seen their scores. The big unknown is the level of competition they've played. Liberty and Fauquier are well-established. They've gotten the short end of the stick twice...See the Friday print edition of the Fauquier Weekend for the complete story.
