Kettle Run principal says varsity schedule the right decision

There's no turning back now.

Kettle Run High launched its varsity football program with a humbling 81-0 loss to Liberty last week, and braces for another potentially rough experience against its other new county rival, Fauquier, Friday at Falcon Field at 7:30 p.m.

Kettle Run principal Major Warner said the decision to play varsity — even without any seniors on the team — was a result of feedback from the school community.

Warner said decision makers did not want Kettle Run's juniors to be deprived of the chance to play varsity football.

Despite the opening game's outcome, Warner doesn't think fielding a varsity squad was a mistake, even though the youthful, undersized Cougars got pushed all over the field by Liberty.

“If I had to do it all over again, given the feedback we got from the community, the kids and staff, I'd do it the same way,” said Warner. “What we saw Friday night, in spite of the score, remains a source of pride and energy for Kettle Run High.”

But the principal did indicate he wishes the schedule could have included more smaller schools. “We had a problem of not always picking what games we'd get,” said Warner.

He said Fauquier and Liberty dropped a game against each other to give Kettle Run two games...
