Police and court briefs
Fatal wreckA 24-year-old Petersburg man died in a single-vehicle accident on U.S. 17 north of Warrenton Aug. 28, police said.
Tyjuan Kelley was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Aveos he had apparently rented when it ran off the left side of the road and went into a ditch. The car then overturned and struck a tree.
Kelley was not wearing a seatbelt and speed may have been a factor in the crash, according topolice.
Burglaries investigated
Three residential burglaries reported to the Fauquier County Sheriff's Office last week remain under investigation.
Police reports indicate two of the incidents were reported to the agency Aug. 25. Someone from the 4100 block of Granite Street reported the first one. The estimated loss is $1,020.
A caller from the 2200 block of Winchester Road in Delaplane reported the second incident. In that case the estimated loss is $10,000.
Someone from the 2700 block of Landmark School Road in The Plains reported the third incident on Aug. 26. There is an estimated loss of more than $3,500 in that case.
Shooting at an occupied dwelling
Warrenton police received a report of shots being fired at a house Aug. 27.
According to Warrenton Police Chief Connie Novak, an unknown person or persons shot seven rounds into a townhouse on Colonel Edmonds Court. The owner did not know what happened until she was getting ready to leave for work.
An investigation determined the incident happened shortly after midnight.
'Checkpoint Strikeforce' yields arrest
Roy D. Fincham, 24, of no fixed address, was reportedly arrested on drug charges Aug. 30.
According to Remington Police Officer Tim Benjamin, Fincham provided a false name and Social Security number when he came through a checkpoint that night. Further investigation by Remington Police Officer A. Abdo determined that Fincham also had illegal drugs with him, Benjamin said.
Fincham was charged with possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, forgery of a public document and identity theft.
He was taken to the Fauquier County Adult Detention Center, where he was initially held without bond.
Fail to control vehicle
Nijgasha Lynn McKenzie, 23, of Stephens City, was charged with failure to control a motor vehicle after she was involved in a car crash Aug. 29, police said.
According to a Fauquier County deputy's report, the accident happened on Warrenton Road (U.S. 17) near Spring Mill Road at approximately 8:47 a.m.
McKenzie was driving a 1999 Toyota Corolla southbound on Warrenton Road when she lost control of the vehicle and it went off the left side of the road. After leaving the roadway, the car hit several trees and a small hill, according to the report.
McKenzie complained of pain but did not have any visible signs of injury and was not transported to the hospital by EMS personnel, police said.
Failure to yield right of way
A Warrenton man was reportedly charged with failure to yield the right of way after he was involved in a car crash Aug. 29.
A Fauquier County deputy's report indicates the accident happened in the area of 9719 James Madison Highway (U.S. 29) and Marsh Road (U.S. 17).
John Henry Furr, 64, of Warrenton, was driving a 1995 Chevrolet when he stopped in the median and tried to make a left turn on to U.S. 29, police said. He told police motorists in the right lane had stopped and waved him to turn.
When he did, he allegedly sideswiped a 2002 Volkswagen Jetta driven by Rebecca Lee Baker, 56, of Locust Grove.
Both drivers complained of pain but neither had any visible signs of injury and neither was transported to the hospital by EMS personnel, according to the report.
Distracted drivers involved in wrecks
Distracted driving was apparently a factor in two car crashes worked by Fauquier County deputies.
The first wreck happened in the 8200 block of the Eastern Bypass at approximately 10:12 p.m. Aug. 29. Ckaz Dean, 42, of Bealeton, was driving a 2001 Toyota Camry southbound when he allegedly reached for something that “fell from the window.” When he did so, he jerked the wheel to the right, causing the car to go off the road in that direction, according to the report.
The vehicle hit a bank and flipped onto its roof. Dean complained of pain but did not have any visible signs of injury and was not transported to the hospital, police said. A passenger in his vehicle who was hurt was transported to the hospital by EMS personnel.
Dean was charged with failure to control a vehicle, police said.
The second accident occurred on Leeds Manor Road near Aldrich Court at approximately 1:55 p.m. Aug. 31.
A Fauquier County deputy's report indicates Randy Dwayne Pierce Jr., 18, of Upperville, was driving a 1999 Ford Ranger and lost control of it when he reached down to the floor of the vehicle for a dropped soda. As he did that, the vehicle went off the right shoulder and hit a tree, police said.
Pierce, who appeared to be injured, was not transported to the hospital by EMS personnel, however, a passenger who was also injured was taken to the hospital, according to the report.
Pierce was charged with reckless driving.
Possession with intent to distribute
Two Sterling men were reportedly arrested on drug charges following a traffic stop in Marshall Aug. 31.
Virginia State Trooper Derek Mabie, who is assigned to the Area 12 Office in Warrenton, said he stopped a Saturn for an equipment violation in the area of Winchester Road and John Marshall Highway at approximately 9:45 p.m.
He said he detected an odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle and saw that a passenger in the back seat had suspected marijuana in his pocket. The substance was clearly visible, Mabie added.
Mabie charged Bryan Prilliman, 18, with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute based on the amount of the substance he had. The driver, Austin Shafter, 19, was charged with simple possession of marijuana.
Larcenies reported
Fauquier County detectives are investigating three larcenies reported to the Sheriff's Office last week.
Two axle assemblies worth approximately $510 were allegedly stolen from someone in the 11000 block of Coffman Circle in Bealeton Aug. 25.
Someone from the 13000 block of John Marshall Highway in Linden reported the theft of cash, a remote starter and a purse Aug. 25. The estimated loss is $670.
A caller from the 2000 block of Aquia Road in Midland reported the theft of approximately $660 in cash Aug. 30.
Burn ban lifted
Due to last week's rainfall, the burn ban recently put into effect has been lifted, according to Department of Fire and Emergency Services Chief Philip Myer.
Fauquier County fire officials had implemented the ban as a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of open and brush fires. However, residents with permits to do so may now resume open burning.
