Remington This Week: Noak's Ark Thrift Shop to open

At its last dinner on Aug. 29, at least 100 persons ate to their delight at St. Luke's parish hall prior to the Labor Day weekend.

Setting up the buffet-style arrangements was Helen Jones. Cooking the great main food courses were Jane and Edwin Currie, Lenny Jarles and Gina Hammond. Serving the delicious entries were the Rev. James Hammond, Ruth Jarles, Sheryl Szobzcky, Maria Markley, and Kathleen and Tom Bilger. Rich Wittshire prepared the very tasty spaghetti salad; appetizing cole slaw was crafted by Ruth and Lenny Jarles; and various desserts were stunningly whipped up by Gina Hammond, Sheryl Szobolzcky, Maria Markley, Kathleen and Karina Bilger, Ed Currie, as well as Betsy and Nancy Brittle.

Many people and notables showed up during the course of the evening, such as the upcoming birthday girl herself, Nellie Simmons. Nellie will celebrate her 100th birthday next week. Nellie's longevity is believed to be attributable to the fact that she always liked to cook, was very active in the Remington United Methodist Church and had been a member of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Fire Department.

In other local community activities, Cub Scout Pack 1180 will be holding its annual Back-To-School Open House at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, in the M.M. Pierce Elementary School cafeteria (back door).

Tom Benjamin, executive director of Fauquier Community Action reports that Dominion Power has made a generous grant of 10,000 fluorescent light bulbs to replace incandescent light bulbs to help reduce energy costs. FCA began distributing the bulbs on Sept. 2 from its office. For more information, phone (540) 347-7000.
