The Plains This Week: Family arts and crafts planned

Hunt Country Yarns is hosting a knitting party on its front porch for The Plains Day on Oct. 4. Come sit on the porch and watch the parade go by at 10:30 a.m.

Hunt Country Yarns is the knitting center for the region and has just received Hand Painted Knitting Yarn's Tweed Sock Wool. It is hand-dyed in gorgeous colors, and tweed, to boot.

Hunt Country Yarns holds workshops for knitters, such as the March 2009 Chris Bylsma workshop. The sweater chosen for this workshop is "Symphony." Hunt Country Yarns has the patterns in stock for this sweater.

For more information about Hunt Country yarns, contact Bob Kelly at hcy@skeins.com or contact the store at (540) 253-9990. Or just stop by the store at 6482 Main Street, settle into chair on the front porch and knit as the world goes by.

Zigzag Crafts Gallery will be offering a variety of young people's after-school art classes, plus three Sunday afternoon Family Workshops this fall.

With the classes, Zig Zag's goal is to encourage young minds to explore new creative possibilities while helping them through the steps of a long-term process.

In "The Wonderland of Illustrated Books," Wednesdays, 4-5:30 p.m. during the month of October, students will turn their original stories into finished, illustrated books. The second after-school class, "First Impressions," Mondays, 4-5:30 p.m. Nov. 10 to Dec. 1, will concentrate on printmaking, and will culminate in a student exhibition.

The recommended ages for these classes are students in grades 3-6, but Zigzag will work with students of many ages.

The ZigZag Sunday afternoon workshops are a great way for parents and children to share a special time and enjoy trying something new. No previous experience is required. The ages recommended for these Sunday workshops spans 4-100 years.

Here is the schedule for the Sunday salons: Sunday, Sept. 21, 3-5 p.m., will be Basket Weaving 101. If you missed it in college, now is the time to learn basket weaving. Have fun making your own Sturbridge/Berry Picking basket.

Sunday, Oct. 19, 3-5 p.m. the topic is All Booked Up! Learn how to make Accordion/Pop Up or Asian bindings. Be sure to bring along your sense of nonsense and poetic yearnings to share.

On Sunday, Nov. 23, 3-5 p.m. Zig Zag turns into The Holiday Card Shop. Make your own holiday cards in all sorts of shapes, sizes and designs, and you'll never return to the land of Hallmark.

Zigzag is accepting registrations now. Just call Susan Jeffries at (540) 253-5364 for more information and to receive an application. Or come by Zigzag, 6477 Main St., The Plains, anytime from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.

The Plains Traffic Calming Committee meets at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, at the John Page Turner House. The Traffic Calming Committee meetings are open to the public and all are welcome.

Sept. 3 is the birthday of Chloe Cook. On Sept. 4, Lester and Dawn Sutphin and Mark and Missy Sue Gochenour celebrate wedding anniversaries. George Pearson has a birthday on Sept. 5. Sept. 6 is Delbert and Libby Week's anniversary.

The Plains columnist David M. Roos can be reached at (540) 253-5737 or DavidMRoos@aol.com.
