Greenwich Presbyterian Church
Historic Greenwich Presbyterian Church is located at the intersection of Vint Hill Road and Greenwich Road, in the village of Greenwich. It traces its beginnings to 1810, when a church of logs was built by Mrs. Gilbert Moxley, the first Presbyterian to live in the area.
The congregation soon outgrew the original cabin, and a second log church was built. In 1854, construction of the present church was started on land donated by Charles Green of "The Lawn," an Englishman who had married Mrs. Moxley's granddaughter, Lucy Ireland Hunton.
The church was completed in 1858 at a cost of $4,000.
During the Civil War, the area was occupied by Federal troops, who wanted to use the new church as a hospital.
However, Green used his influence as an English citizen to prevent the misuse of the property, acting on a clause in the original deed forbidding its use for anything but a house of worship.
The Federals used the old log church instead, which burned at the end of the war.
The church has been well-maintained over the years, with the original pews still used and the wainscoting still in place.
About 30 years ago, a building housing the education unit, fellowship hall, and kitchen was built on the property. The church also operates the Greenwich Preschool (ages 3-5).
Recent renovations to the church include new paint, carpet and organ, a paved parking lot, and new outside lighting.
The Rev. Don Meeks serves as pastor of the church. He and his family moved to the area from Boulder, Colo., in April 2001.
Three worship services are conducted each Sunday morning, at 8:15, 9:30 and 11 a.m. Sunday school for all ages begins at 9:30 a.m., and junior church is offered at 11:30 a.m.
The church has recently called Eric Beckman of Durham, N.C., as associate pastor.
Outreach activities include missions to Mexico, work in West Virginia, helping Fauquier's family shelter (The Haven), and SERVE.
