Cedar Lee seals the deal
Championship seasons aren't always easy on a coach, even one at the helm of a dynasty, like Cedar Lee Middle School football coach Martinis Harris.
Cedar Lee navigated its way to a fifth consecutive Fauquier County middle school title by downing Auburn 14-12 last Thursday. Cedar Lee (5-1) finished ahead of Warrenton (3-1-2).
“It was a long, exciting, frustrating season,” said coach Harris, who described a rocky journey that included a midseason loss to front-running Warrenton and the reduction of his roster due to grade issues and discipline problems.
“I stated at the beginning of the year that those that stayed with the team will be champions. I'm proud of the boys that stayed,” said Harris, who started with a roster of more than 70 kids and ended with 53.
Delvin Hamlett and Thomas Hough scored against Auburn, with Hamlett tallying the title-clinching two-point conversion on a pass from Tyler Longerbeam.
Harris credited defensive coordinator Earl Dodson for a great game plan.
