Cedar Lee seals the deal

Championship seasons aren't always easy on a coach, even one at the helm of a dynasty, like Cedar Lee Middle School football coach Martinis Harris.

Cedar Lee navigated its way to a fifth consecutive Fauquier County middle school title by downing Auburn 14-12 last Thursday. Cedar Lee (5-1) finished ahead of Warrenton (3-1-2).

It was a long, exciting, frustrating season,” said coach Harris, who described a rocky journey that included a midseason loss to front-running Warrenton and the reduction of his roster due to grade issues and discipline problems.

I stated at the beginning of the year that those that stayed with the team will be champions. I'm proud of the boys that stayed,” said Harris, who started with a roster of more than 70 kids and ended with 53.

Delvin Hamlett and Thomas Hough scored against Auburn, with Hamlett tallying the title-clinching two-point conversion on a pass from Tyler Longerbeam.

Harris credited defensive coordinator Earl Dodson for a great game plan.
