Eagles grab third at district cheer meet, make regions
No one likes to be last in line.
But it was an exciting wait for the Liberty cheerleading team last week.
Performing eighth at last Wednesday's eight-team Cedar Run District competition cheer meet, the Eagle cheer team placed third, making them one of four teams to qualify for regionals Nov. 1 at Franklin County. Also advancing were district champion Osbourn Park, runnerup Osbourn and fourth place Battlefield. Fauquier finished seventh.
Making the wait worse for Liberty was that the district meet was in Bealeton. However, Liberty's fans yelled and screamed when the Eagles' performance time arrived.
“We did have to wait, but it was fine,” said first year coach Blaire Conner. “The girls did not watch the competition. They stayed together and got each other pumped up.”
The Eagle coach said her 20-member team “had a lot of crowd appeal and really fought to perfect their routine.” The coach said there were no deductions taken off.
The squad was led by key members Meghan Costello, Heather Huntington, Sarah Smith, Heather Usiak, Emily Rinker, Theresa Wintermyer and Ashley Munson.
Liberty competed without Sam Perry — one of the team's top cheerleaders — but Conner expects Perry back for regionals.
Meanwhile, Fauquier coach Shelly Angelos was also pleased with her team's performance.
“The girls did really good. They came together at the end,” said Angelos, a first year coach who relocated from New Jersey. “All their stunts hit...”
