Marshall This Week: MVFD open house this Saturday
This week, I felt it was important to touch on the importance of Fire Safety Week, Oct. 5-11. With all of the house fires that have been happening in our community, leaving families homeless and possessions lost, it's important to keep you and your family safe.
The Marshall Volunteer Fire Department is having its annual Open House and Fire Prevention Day 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 11. At this event, you can help you and your family learn fire safety tips, how to hunt for home hazards, and how to build an escape plan.
A few studies have shown that kitchen fires, heating (wood stoves and heating systems), electrical, and smoking materials are leading causes of house fires and deaths.
Before winter hits, remember to get a tuneup of your heating system to check for electrical hazards that could lead to a fire. Change the batteries in all of your smoke detectors. If you don't have one and can't afford one, call your local fire department for assistance.
Plan on attending the MVFD's open house at 4160 Rectortown Road. Free lunch will be served. There will be lots of games for the children, demonstrations of the fire trucks, fireman's gear, tours of the firehouse, an emergency helicopter landing, and the opportunity to meet some of our local firefighters.
The event is free, and the knowledge you leave with could save your life or someone else's. If you need more information, reach me by at karennalls@hotmail.com or call the station at (540) 364-2047.
Something to mark on your calendar: Young Explorations Preschool will be hosting its second Holiday Shopping fundraiser on Saturday, Nov. 22, at Emmanuel Episcopal in Delaplane. Vendors turning in an application by Oct. 17 will be included in the advertising.
Contact Betty West at YEP for further information. New this year will be "A Visit With Santa" as well as Christmas gift ideas from many home parties and crafters.
Birthdays to celebrate this week: Floyd Grigsby, Molly Baker, Mr. A.W. Patton, Tina Taylor, Traci Lambert, and Frank Hall. Happy birthday to you all.
Have a wonderful week and don't forget to change the batteries in your smoke detector.
