Eagles post sick win over Vikings, 23-14
There is a clear and unmistakable imbalance to the Cedar Run District football race this year.
At the top are Battlefield (9-0), Fauquier (7-2), Liberty (7-2) and Osbourn (5-4).
At the bottom are Culpeper (0-9), Loudoun Valley (1-8), Stonewall Jackson (2-7) and suddenly skidding Osbourn Park (4-5).
There is no middle, really, so what was the deal with a genuinely tight Liberty-Loudoun Valley game last Friday? Liberty led just 8-6 at the half and stumbled to a 23-14 victory.
On Halloween night, those creatures with the hollowed out faces and skeletal looks were Eagle football players looking like walking corpses from a Pirates of the Caribbean remake, filmed in Leesburg.
Coach Tommy Buzzo said in his 13 years at LHS, he’s never had an Liberty team act so zombie-like. Weakened by illnesses, Buzzo described a veritable plague of flu, strep throat and pneumonia sweeping his ballclub. “We need them all to go home and get some more rest,” said Buzzo.
Among the affected players were quarterback Nick Potts, who was pulled in the second half, and Corey Lillard, who was so brilliant he may want to stay sick for Friday’s pivotal Fauquier game. But Buzzo didn’t want to diminish from Loudoun Valley’s effort. A struggling team, the Vikings hung with the Eagles all night, making hard hits, harassing Potts when he tried to pass, and forcing five Eagle turnovers.
“They played us pretty good,” said Lillard. “The big thing was we got through it and can get ready for our next game.”
Derrick Lee (two interceptions, 59-yard touchdown reception) and Lillard were in the middle of most of the game’s key plays — although Lillard started with a miscue he would rather forget, as he fumbled on the Eagles’ first play from scrimmage.
The University of Virginia recruit made up for it, as he registered two touchdown runs and a safety, when he drilled Viking running back Colin Owens two yards deep in the end zone. Lillard also ran for a two-point conversion, added a 36-yard run off a fake punt, and intercepted a pass...See the Wednesday print edition of the Fauquier Times-Democrat for the complete story.
