Bishop to visit June 1

Bishop David Bena will visit Church of the Word Gainesville at 10 a.m. Sunday, June 1. Following the service, there will be a potluck meal. The general public is invited to attend both the service and the meal.

He will be baptizing, confirming and receiving a number of families and individuals into membership

Dr. Bena was a priest for 26 years before being consecrated as a bishop for Albany in 2000. For the past seven years, he has served under Albany's senior bishop, the Rt. Rev. Daniel Herzog, to help make Albany one of the largest and most active Episcopal diocese in the nation.

"I have sensed God's call to minister to disenfranchised Anglicans around America who are in need of Episcopal oversight," Bishop Bena said recently.

Bena served as a Marine officer in the Vietnam War. He did his undergraduate work at Stetson University, and completed his seminary training at Virginia Theological Seminary (Alexandria, Va.).

He served as both an Air Force chaplain and as a parish priest for over two decades.

Bena has earned a doctorate from the Graduate Theological Foundation, which is an inter-religious faculty based in South Bend, Ind. He also holds an honorary doctorate from The Episcopal Church's Virginia Theological Seminary.

Bena has joined the Convocation of Anglicans in North America, http://www.canaconvocation.org/.

Bena, who has retired from his post in Albany, will now serve as CANA's Suffragan Bishop. More than 65 congregations and more than 120 clergy have thus far joined CANA.

Church of the Word is an Anglican Church situated on Lee Highway in Gainesville next door to McDonald's. For more information, visit www.pwcweb.com/ecw or call (703) 754-9673. Visitors are most welcome.
