The Plains: Sign up now for summer art camp

The peony blossoms are in full bloom. The best way to enjoy them is to cut them and bring them in the home where their unrivaled beauty can be enjoyed.

German bearded irises are also in full bloom. My mother calls them "flags" because they bloom during Memorial Day weekend, and, further north, they hold out until Flag Day in June. Either way, the standards of their blossoms are waving from their stalks.

Thanks go out to the good people who lined Main Street with our country's flag for the Memorial Day holiday. The flags are another example of the many activities The Community League of The Plains supports.

On special national holidays, while most people are still working up to that first cup of coffee, volunteers placed the Old Glories high on the poles to greet citizens and visitors alike. It is a very welcomed sight, and thanks again to the volunteers for the town tradition.

Camp Zigzag is going to be in session for two weeks of fun and creativity for kids. The Zig Zag Camp weeks are June 16-20 and June 23-27. The cost per camper per week is $75.

Zigzag Crafts Gallery, with the sponsorship of The Plains Community League, will be offering a two-week young people's art program for ages 7-12, June 16-27. Camp Zigzag will be held at The John Page Turner Community House, 6473 Main Street, The Plains.

Young people can sign up for one or two weeks. The first week will offer a variety of puppet-making projects, with a grand finale puppet show at the end. The second week will concentrate on multicultural arts, including African printed cloth, tie-dying, Chinese calligraphy, papermaking, Japanese fish banners, and Navajo weaving.

Daily sessions will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Kids should bring a bag lunch and a smock or long shirt. Many of the activities will take place outdoors on the Community House lawn. For more information and to register, contact Susan Jeffries at (540) 253-5364 or susan.jeffries@verizon.net. Or come by Zigzag (Wednesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.), 6477 Main St., The Plains.

Two and a half centuries ago, new settlers streamed into Fauquier County. To mark the 250-year mark, there will be a countywide celebration. Various groups are raising monies to fund the parades, parties and fetes that will be held across the county.

Marshall's 250th Fauquier County Celebration Committee is sponsoring a community yard sale on June 14 in front of State Farm Insurance Building. Space is available for $15.

Contact Marie at (540) 364-2868 to reserve your space. This yard sale will help raise funds for Marshall's tribute to Fauquier County's 250-year anniversary. It will also be a way to sell some of the stuff that has been accumulating in your home for the last 250 years.

Chase Allen Weston, the son of Jenny and Greg Weston, was born on April 16. Many in The Plains remember Chase's mom as Jenny Bourne.

Samuel Gray Morrison celebrated his special day on May 25. Dale Koglin receives birthday wishes on May 29, followed by Anthony Smarrelli and Delbert Weeks on May 30. Katherine Cook and Hannah Cook have their twin cakes on May 31. Wish Jonathan Koglin a happy birthday on June 2.
