Marshall: MUMC dinner/silent auction set

I hope everyone had a great holiday weekend.

There was so much to do last weekend. The Delaplane Strawberry Festival had perfect weather and a perfect turnout.

My family and I also got to attend karaoke night at Old Salem Restaurant. It was a big hit.

There were several singers, including Warren Lee, Shirley Marlow, Jimmy Campbell Sr., Linda Jean Cornell, Donna Campbell, Allison Lynch, Kerry Lynch, Brittany Mountjoy, Ashleigh Randolph and Hannah Helsel.

Owners Barbara and Mike Lynch sang a great duet. There was also dancing, which made for a great time. I'll keep you updated for the next karaoke night.

Congratulations to the Marshall Middle School seventh- and eighth-grade band for receiving a Superior rating, first place in their class, and second place overall in the Junior High/Middle School Band division at the Music in the Parks competition at Busch Gardens, Williamsburg on April 27.

The judges were music professors from ODU and the University of Richmond and were very complimentary; one wrote "Awesome!" on the scoring sheet.

The students themselves represented Marshall and Fauquier County very well, showing poise and talent on stage, and school spirit and courtesy while enjoying Busch Gardens all day.

Also, congratulations to the MMS 2008-09 National Junior Honor Society Inductees, who were recognized in a school ceremony on May 14: Courtney Aswadeekul, Colin Cate, Lauren Eline, Avery Finkel, Logan Fisher, Emma Nobile, Chenoa Payne, Corinne Petro, Mollie Rodgers, William Stribling and Bradley Troutman.

Tommy Johnson and his family would like to thank the volunteers, supporters, and everyone who participated in his walk/run. The generosity and gracious contributions have helped tremendously. Tommy is now in Atlanta, Ga., undergoing further therapy. Please keep him on your prayer list as he continues to advance in his progress.

What's going on this week?

Marshall United Methodist church is having a Mission Dinner and Silent Auction 4:30-7:30 p.m. this Friday, May 31. All proceeds will go to help cover costs to send the Adult Mission Team to the Navajo Nation in New Mexico to help with general house repairs for elderly couples and families living there.

With 50 percent of the Navajos living at or below the poverty level, there is a lot of work to do. The mission will be leaving Aug. 2 and returning Aug. 10.

There are many baskets and items donated for the silent auction. Among them are a matching full bath fixture set, complete set of doors, fittings and installation, a three-person pass to the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Haymarket, many handmade items and many other big and small gifts to be auctioned off.

Items can be viewed beginning at 4:30 p.m., dinner is served at 5:30 p.m. and bidding closes at 7:30 p.m. (Cash and checks accepted.) Questions? Call Terri Hill at (540) 253-7070.

Birthday wishes go out to Travis Price, Sadie Ryan, Terri Williams and Laura Furr.
