Hartwood Presbyterian Church
Hartwood Presbyterian Church, located on Route 705, just off U.S. 17 in Stafford County, is one of the oldest churches in the area.
The church was organized on July 22, 1825, and was originally known as the Yellow Chapel Anglican Church.
In 1858, the present building of handmade brick was completed at a cost of $2,000. The contemporary design featured a slave gallery upstairs, with an outside entrance.
During the Civil War, the building was used by both Union and Confederate forces, but by the end of the war, the interior had been destroyed by fire. Some Civil War dead are buried in the church cemetery.
After the war, the congregation returned, and in 1868, the church was repaired and renamed Hartwood Presbyterian Church.
The church has been well maintained over the years, keeping many original doors, shutters and woodwork. In recognition of its historical value, Hartwood Presbyterial Church has been placed on the U.S., Virginia, and Stafford County historical registers.
In the 1950s, an educational wing was added to the rear of the building. In 2002, the congregation began using the new two-story Christian Education Center, located behind the main sanctuary and matching its style of architecture. This building serves both the church and the local community.
Shawn Jason Smith is the pastor. He graduated from Seattle Pacific University in 2000 as a Christian education major and from Princeton Theological Seminary in 2005. He and his family moved here from Truckee, Calif.
On Sunday, worship services are offered at 9 and 11 a.m. Sunday School for all ages is at 10 a.m.
