Goldvein: Next Monroe Park meeting June 17
My husband and I spent last weekend in Charlottesville celebrating our anniversary. It was our first visit to Monticello, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. I knew Thomas Jefferson was our third president, but I learned so much more about him.
Jefferson designed and built Monticello over a span of 40 years, but one of his great loves was gardening. His vegetable garden was 1,000 feet long.
I really enjoyed walking through the gardens and hearing about his experiments in the garden. Not only did he write the Constitution, he also kept detailed journals recording all that he planted. Jefferson loved books and could read in seven languages.
Charlottesville is a lovely little town to visit. If you have time, go there and be sure to visit the downtown "mall." It's a great place to eat dinner and window shop.
We also took in a movie, "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull." I highly recommend it, especially if you like action and adventure.
Join me in wishing a happy birthday this week to Kathleen Willingham and Megan Riley on May 30 and Troy Madison and Marilyn Johnson on June 3.
The next Friends of Monroe Park meeting will be 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 17. (This is a change from the usual day of the monthly meeting.)
More volunteers are needed for the Goldvein Jubilee, so come to the meeting if you would like to help out. Call Bob at (540) 752-5330 for more information.
I hope each of you enjoyed your Memorial Day weekend and took a moment to give thanks for those who gave their lives so that we might live free.
This quote is dedicated to them: "If a nation values anything more than freedom, it will lose it's freedom, and the irony of it is that if it is comfort or money that it values more, it will lose that too." — W. Somerset Maugham
Have a terrific week.
