State suspends tax on survival gear

The state is giving some extra incentive to prepare for the upcoming hurricane season.

From May 25-May 31, purchases of certain supplies and equipment needed to prepare for hurricane season will be exempt from sales tax.

"General storm preparedness is essential for everyone, whether we're facing winter storms or tropical storms," said Philip Myer, chief of the Fauquier County Department of Fire and Emergency Services.

While coastal storms don't always affect inland counties directly, they often create flooding and power outages here. In the last five to seven years, Myer said storms have also spawned more tornadoes here than in the past.

Residents should prepare for foul weather by stocking up on flashlights and batteries. They should also make sure their cell phones are fully charged and that they have a traditional phone that plugs into a phone jack as well as cordless phones at home.
