Sumerduck Baptist Church

Sumerduck Baptist Church is located at 5354 Sumerduck Road (Route 651) in the village of Sumerduck.

In 1915, a Baptist Sunday school was conducted in the schoolhouse across the road from where the church now stands. It was under the leadership of Joseph Smith and Robert Calvin Embrey, a resident of the community, but at that time a member of Grove Baptist Church.

Embrey, seeing the need for a place to worship, purchased the land on which Sumerduck Baptist Church was erected and furnished. He also provided money for the church's upkeep.

The church was dedicated the first Sunday in September 1915.

Brother R.C. Embrey employed Brother Cummings to preach for one year for the sum of $100, which he himself paid. In the early days of the church's organization, worship services were held monthly on the fourth Sunday.

A few years after the erection of the church sanctuary, some additional land was donated to the church by T.H. Maddox, to be used as the church cemetery. The cemetery records are now in the possession of Thomas Carter.

Many improvements have been made to the church since its organization. In 1940, the church was wired for electricity for the sum of $41. In 1959-60, Sunday school departments were constructed. Also during this time, the heating system was converted from wood to oil.

A few years later, bathroom facilities were installed, and during the 1980s, a fellowship hall was added. The fellowship hall was enlarged by adding a kitchen area and more bathroom facilities. Construction was completed in September 2003, and it was dedicated in November that year.

The evangelist is Pete Siock of Fredericksburg. Lois Embrey is the church clerk, and the church treasurer is Phyllis Acors. The deacons are John Hitt and Tom Yancey.

Regular Sunday services include Sunday School at 10 a.m. and morning worship at 11 a.m., which includes a chat with the children and children's church. Bible Study is held at 6 p.m. Sunday and 7 p.m. Wednesday.
