Fauquier County Public Schools

May 26: Memorial Day holiday, no school

June 7: Graduation for both Fauquier High School and Liberty High School; FHS graduation exercises at 8 a.m. at Falcon Field; LHS graduation exercises at 7 p.m. at Nissan Pavilion.

June 10: Half day for all schools (exams)

June 11: Half day for all schools (exams); fourth nine-weeks ends

June 12: Teacher Work Day

 

May 12 make-up: Banked time will be used to make up the day that Fauquier County Public Schools students missed on Monday, May 12, due to flooding throughout the county.

Banked time is time that exceeds the state's requirement for 990 hours of instruction in a school year. The FCPS calendar for school year 2007-2008 contains sufficient banked time to cover May 12 without requiring an additional day of attendance.

The final day of school this year will remain Wednesday, June 11.

Grace Miller

Yearbooks are here. The 2007-2008 Edition of the Grace Miller Elementary School yearbook is on sale now. Order forms have been sent home with students. If you have not returned your child's yearbook order form, there is still time.

Distribution is scheduled for Friday, May 23. Yearbooks will be distributed first to those students who have turned in order forms and payment. Remaining yearbooks will be for sale on a first come, first serve basis until all yearbooks are sold. The cost is $17 per yearbook.

Special thanks to staff member Nancy May for another year of outstanding work on the yearbook. Everyone appreciates all the time and effort she puts into this project.

Field Days are coming. Grades K-2 will be holding their field day (in the morning only) on Tuesday, June 3. Grades 3-5 will hold their field day (in the morning only) on Wednesday, June 4. PE teacher Diana Klein is looking for parent volunteers. Please contact her at dklein@fcps1.org to volunteer.

Taylor Middle

The recycling competition being held through Family and Consumer Science classes this term will end on May 23. The winner will be having a "make your own pizza party." As of now, the class in the lead is 4B with 441 items, but 5B is not too far behind with 229 items. Keep bringing in those recyclables!

The final after-school NJHS meeting is scheduled for May 28 for seventh and eighth graders. Please have your ride here by 3:30 p.m.

 

Fauquier High

The public is invited to visit the Weight Room and Wellness Center at Fauquier High School. Drop in any weekday from 3-8 p.m. or 9 a.m.-noon Saturdays. While there, pick up a brochure that includes tips about exercising and other pertinent information about using the Weight Room or call Coach Pulchine (C.S.C.S.) at (540) 347-7501 anytime during these hours. The cost of participating in this program is only $40 per 10-week-session.

Retirees are invited to join the "Silver Circuit" weight training program. This program helps maintain bone density and muscle tone, thereby allowing individuals to continue enjoying their active lifestyles. Cardiovascular health, stamina, flexibility and balance are also addressed. No matter what your age, every day is a good day when you're healthy!

Summer hours for all participants will begin June 23. The weight room will be open 9 a.m.-noon and 1:30-8 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m.-noon Saturdays.

The FHS Spring Chorus Concert & Potluck Supper will be held in the Effie Fries Bell Cafeteria on Friday, May 30, beginning at 6 p.m. The Vocal Ensemble and Choral Ensemble will both be performing. Come and share dinner in a relaxed setting while the choirs entertain. They will also recognize graduating seniors and those students who have achieved special honors this year.

Thursday, May 22, the Top 30 Banquet will take place at 6 p.m.

Band students will present their spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 22.

 

Liberty High

The LHS Spring Chorus Concert & Potluck Supper will be held in the Liberty cafeteria on Tuesday, May 27, beginning at 6 p.m. The Symphonic Choir, Vocal Ensemble, and Choral Ensemble will all be performing. Come and share dinner in a relaxed setting while the choirs entertain. Graduating seniors and those students who have achieved special honors this year will be recognized.

 

Highland

Art supplies needed: Mrs. Laimbeer requests that everyone please save the large-mouth bottles of ketchup and mayonnaise this summer. They make great paint containers for the Tempera paint.

Sophomore to attend HOBY Virginia conference: Zach Nicholls was chosen to attend the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership conference at the University of Richmond later this month. The objectives of the program are to encourage and assist young people in self-development; interface these potential leaders with recognized leaders in business, government, science, industry and education through give-and-take workshops using a question-and-answer format to enhance both knowledge and the ability for critical thinking that will encourage their participation in developing the world of tomorrow; motivate young leaders to their responsibility and the importance of volunteerism; and stimulate opportunities for demonstration of leadership ability for the betterment of community and country through community service.

Box tops and labels: The final collection for the year will be May 21. The school is very close to meeting the goal of $700 for the box tops, and need a few more labels to reach the goal of 20,000 points.

Summer tutoring available: Several Highland faculty will offer summer tutoring for Lower and Middle School students. Please visit the school Web site to see the full list and contact information.

Highland choruses compete in festival: On May 9, the Highland Upper School Chorus and the Middle School Elective Chorus traveled to Hershey, Pa., to compete for ratings in the Music in the Park Festival. Both groups performed for judges and received written and taped comments on their performances. The middle school chorus received mostly "Good" ratings in five categories for their two selections, and also some ratings of "Excellent" and "Superior." Their overall rating was a very high "Good." The Highland Chorus received mostly "Excellent" ratings in the high school categories, with a few ratings of "Good" and several "Superiors," for an overall rating of "Excellent."

 

Midland Christian Academy

May 26: School closed for Memorial Day

June 3: "Night at the Arts," 7 p.m.; all families encouraged to attend. There will be a musical production and a display of art work to enjoy. Refreshments will be provided.

 

Wakefield

May 22-23: "The Ugly Duckling" play, 7 p.m., in the Lower School gym, $5 per person.
