Markham: Strawberry festival May 24-25
May is moving right along, with nice days mixed with drenching rain and wind. The weather people report that this is probably the wettest May ever. No complaints, please.
The Delaplane Strawberry Festival will be held on May 24 and 25 at Sky Meadows State Park near Delaplane. The festival was formerly held in the meadow near the Delaplane Store, and it became so large that it was moved up the road to the state park.
There will be many vendors, activities, music and the sale of many strawberry-related items. The Leeds Church ECW will be handling the bake sale, with all kinds of goodies to eat there or take home for later.
The funds raised from the festival go to support a number of outreach projects of Emmanuel Church, Delaplane.
The Leeds Ruritan Club is pleased to announce the 2008 scholarship winners: Lauren Marshall who will attend Virginia Tech; Ashleigh White going to Longwood; and Lydia Wright, who will go to Clemson. These three young people have outstanding academic records, have participated in extracurricular activities and been active in the community. Congratulations to our three local winners.
Birthday greetings this week to John Wise, Anne Whitelaw, William Stribling, John McCarthy, David Sharp and Molly Wolfe.
The Volunteer Farm at Woodstock is asking for help. This large farm provides a variety of fresh vegetables to needy people in 25 counties and nine cities in Virginia.
With a lagging economy and greater need for assistance, many more people are in need of assistance. The farm is expanding the number of acres to be planted this year, and help is needed to harvest the veggies, starting in June. Details about how you or a group can help can be found at www.Volunteer Farm.org.
The Orlean Volunteer Fire Department had a big breakfast on Sunday. More than 200 people showed up. Great record, and the department wants to thank everyone who showed their support. Remember that the volunteers are here for us every day of the year.
"Capitol Steps," a great spoof on politics and some of the racy scandals on Capitol Hill, was presented Saturday evening at the Highland School.
The cast, talented and extremely funny, provided several hours of entertainment for a large and appreciative audience. It was obvious that the cast enjoyed the program just as much as the audience. What a hoot.
