LHS, FHS vaulters dominate their event at district meet
There's no reason to venture outside Fauquier County to watch the best pole vaulting in the Cedar Run District.Liberty and Fauquier High vaulters seem to be setting the bar for the rest of the district, a notion reinforced Tuesday, the first day of the Cedar Run District track and field championships at Battlefield High School in Haymarket.
Liberty won both the boys and girls pole vault, while seven other county athletes placed top-eight in the event.
Liberty's Lindsey Noe won the girls event with a personal-record vault of 10 feet and was followed by Fauquier's Katie Lewis in second and Liberty's Jessica Libby in fourth.
In the boys event, Liberty's Miles Costello won with a vault of 12 feet, while teammates Thomas Novak and Michael Loy finished second and tied for fourth, respectively.
Fauquier's Tommy Kohler took third, Alex Pinelli also tied for fourth and Garrett Walker finished eighth.
“We’ve got good coaches; it’s coaching by far," Novak said, explaining the strong vaulters in Fauquier County. "Plus, we’ve been doing this for four years, and some of these new schools are just starting to pole vault. It takes time to pole vault. It’s really technical."
Fauquier High vault coach Ted Uhler cleared 15 feet during his track career with the Virginia Cavaliers, and Liberty head coach Dan Thompson cleared 16 feet while at Virginia Tech. Both have used their expertise to help build the county's strong pole vault corps.
"Pole vault is one of those things where you need coaches, and I’m blessed to have a really good coach," FHS head coach Quentin Jones said. "Schools without coaches who have kamikazes going over the top — they’ve got great athletes, but I cringe when they [vault]."
Liberty's Noe is an example of a raw athlete transformed into a strong vaulter through coaching...
