Hawks' loss is sixth straight in state lacrosse final

The Highland Hawks boys lacrosse team ended its season on a disappointing note last Saturday in Charlottesville. Despite a valiant effort, the Hawks lost the state championship to No. 2 seed Covenant School, 10-4.

It was the sixth straight year the Hawks lost in the state championship game, five times to Covenant.

We had a great year,” said coach Kevin Helmick, whose team finished with a 19-3 record.

Coming in as the team to beat, Highland seemed ready to seize the prize that has eluded them, and gave it their all from the start.

Both on the field and in the stands, the Hawks were a presence. Highland supporters yelled and screamed and wore blue and gold. Hawk emblems were painted on many faces, and the signature Highland flag was waved with energy in the stands.

On the field, the Hawks stood their ground, scrapping after loose balls and forcing the Covenant offense to play the perimeter, at times settling for long shots instead of the open drives for which they were pushing.

However, this game had a rocky start for the Hawks.

Eagle Andy Kolberg scored three of his six goals in the first quarter, putting the Hawks at a 3-0 disadvantage.

Early in the second, sophomore Brendon McCann scored for the Hawks, but the Eagles came back with two of their own. Another goal by Kolberg finished off the first half with the Eagles up 6-1.

The Hawks came out stronger after halftime, but were still outscored in the second half 4-3...
