Facebook takes steps to tighten rules

For the past few years, Fauquier County deputies have been patrolling cyberspace — including social networking sites — in order to monitor questionable activity that could be harmful to younger users here.

Specifically, Maj. Paul Mercer of the Fauquier County Sheriff's Office said deputies have established a presence on MySpace and Facebook to track cyber-bullying and other issues that could affect Fauquier teens.

Since 2006, he and 1st Sgt. Sal Torelli have also done presentations about Internet safety and the use of social Internet sites to parent-teacher organizations and other groups throughout the county.

While parents are becoming more aware of the potential dangers the sites can pose for young users, site administrators have taken steps to make the sites safer.
