Like any private enterprise, Marriott Ranch near Hume must find innovative ways to pay the bills, according to General Manager Lanier Cate.

To that end, Marriott Westfields Conference Center Inc. wants county government approval for a hunting preserve and a clay shooting and firing range at the 4,200-acre farm on Route 635.

The hunting preserve and clay shooting range would be available by appointment to ranch guests only, not the general public, Cate said.

The target range would be used during deer hunting season to sight rifles, he said.
