Warrenton boy dies from injuries sustained in crash

An eight-year-old Warrenton boy reportedly died from injuries sustained in a car crash on Sunday.

According to Erika Hernandez, a spokesperson for the Prince William County Police Department, the wreck that claimed Joshua Adams' life happened at approximately 5:57 a.m.

Police responded to a report of the crash at the intersection of Lee Highway and Somerset Crossing Drive in Gainesville. The officers found that a 2004 Honda Odyssey van had stopped at the red traffic light to make a left turn from the northbound lanes of Lee Highway onto Somerset Crossing Drive, Hernandez said.

A 1998 Toyota Tacoma driven by a Manassas man identified as Rodney Aaron Martin, 22, drifted into the turn lane where the van had stopped and rear ended it, Hernandez added.

Joshua Adams and a 52-year woman who was in the van were flown to an area hospital. The man driving the van was treated for his injuries at the scene, then transported to an area hospital.

"The boy had been laying down in the rear seat without a seat belt and was thrown forward into the center console causing severe injuries," Hernandez said. "At 2:55 p.m., the eight-year-old victim succumbed to his injuries."

Martin was initially charged with DUI and released on a magistrate's summons, Hernandez said. He was later charged with involuntary manslaughter and is being held at the Manassas Adult Detention Center pending  a  June 13 court appearance.

The investigation is ongoing.
